Axel is from a long line of tattoo artists who weave enchantments into their work. His parents came to New York from Iceland. There was a story passed down from generation to generation that one day a descendent of this family - a boy born with the wings of an angel - would help decide the fate of the world. Sure enough, Axel was born with the tattoo of angel wings already imprinted upon his back.

Though he grew up in New York, he also learned to speak Icelandic - the native language of his ancestors - since it was the primary language spoken at home. His parents trained him in the art of their ancestors and taught him as best they could how to tap into his inner strength to do anything to his full potential. However, Axel never held a great deal of inerest in his fate, or doing his best at much of anything, for that matter. He slacked off all throughout his school days and graduated high school with barely mediocre grades. But he entered Briarcliffe College and emerged with his Bachelor's Degree in graphic design nonetheless.

He dated and married his girlfriend Lissa from college. She designed video games while he wanted to open his own tattoo parlor. They had one child together - a daughter - and so they could both work, Axel set up shop in a rented garage in their apartment complex. But shortly later they realized they weren't able to balance their careers and raise a child simultaneously. It wasn't until his wife met someone in her own field of work (who, in her words, was a far more responsible parent and human being in general) that they finally filed for divorce.

Now at 34, Axel does run his own tattoo parlor called Charmed Scars in downtown New York City. It's a successful and well-known business, and he is looking to take life easy.

Axel is very laid back and borders on lazy, at times a little absent-minded. While he was married, he would often times get so consumed in his work that he would forget he was supposed to watch the kid. He is constantly forgetting where he puts things and what needs to be done, and he procrastinates on the things that he does remember.

Usually when faced with decisions, he likes to take the easier road. Art is his life, so he loves his work. His apartment is cluttered with paintings and drawings of every nature and design, though he especially loves the fantasy genre, be it mythical creatures or landscapes. He's messy and he likes it that way; it's a rare day that he can see the floor of his bedroom amidst the piles of clean and dirty clothes, and all his sketches strewn about everywhere.

He has a habit of swearing quite a bit without really noticing. Concerning his destiny, so far he hasn't taken it very seriously. It's not that he doubts the reality of it, but he figures he won't have to deal with it for a long time.

As might be expected, Axel is covered in tattoos. He has dragon creatures coiled around his arms and other various symbols all over his body. He always dresses down and comfortable, and if he owns anything remotely close to a suit, it's probably buried so deep beneath all the other junk in his apartment that he'd never find it. He has a pair of designer shades that he wears all the time, even indoors. He has a rugged look about his face, shaving only when he gets annoyed with all the bristle. That usually amounts to about twice a week. His dark brown hair is grown out just past his shoulders, though most of the time it's kept tied back and out of the way. However, despite being messy, he does generally at least remember to shower every day.

Axel's power is a form of sorcery, called tattoo magic. He is able to weave enchantments into the tattoos he draws into someone's skin. Spells range from long life, to good fortune, to so much as binding the souls of lovers together so that they might find one another in future lives. A frequently used spell involves infusing the spirit of an animal into a tattooed image of that animal.

As a weapon, he can use this magic to cause (temporary) paralysis or to give someone constant chills or other symptoms of illness. The more severe the degree, the more it takes to complete the enchantment successfully. It is very difficult to kill someone directly with tattoo magic because it takes so much power and energy that it's harmful to the artist. Likewise, it is thought to be impossible to grant such things as immortality through this sort of sorcery, though there are myths that it has been done.

Axel carries a tattoo gun around with him wherever he goes, as a sort of precaution. In a fight it's obviously difficult to tattoo someone, but even a few squiggles can cause some damage. In a pinch, he can also use wash-off tattoos for very weak, very temporary effects. Regular pens can work to some extent, though as soon as the ink is smudged, the enchantment is damaged, and washing the ink away will erase the spell.
